The Belt Of Truth Part1

November 30, 1994 | Speaker: Bro Jurem Ramos

We begin today with the detailed study of the Whole Armor. Spiritual warfare is an activity of the whole Body of Christ working together. (Gary Kinnaman, OVERCOMING THE DOMINION OF DARKNESS)   Eph 6:13, Therefore YOU TOGETHER put on the full armor of God (help each other get dressed for battle), so that when the day of evil comes, you TOGETHER may be able to stand your ground, and after you TOGETHER have done everything, to stand.   Spiritual warfare is Body ministry. A house divided against itself cannot stand, but when there is spiritual agreement, the power of God’s people multiplies exponentially. (Lev 26:7,8 “You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you”.
  1. Belt – Purpose: Not for decoration like today’s clothing. It was to gather and bind together loose garments. This was the first thing that they did when they were ready to work or to fight. It gave their bodies freedom for action. It gave them some sense of confidence.
Three Purposes: a) made them ready
  1. b) gave them freedom
  2. c) gave them confidence.
Webster’s New World Dictionary, “Gird up one’s loins”
  • means to get ready to do something difficult of strenuous.
Lk 12:35 Let your loins be girded about… Be dressed ready for service…
1Pet 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind Therefore prepare your minds for action…
Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins grit with truth. ( for the translators to be consistent with the analogy of the armor of God did not translate it as they did with two previous passages.     TRUTH
  1. Some say it means –sincerity, honesty, or truthfulness, or personal integrity. The condition of your private life, truth inside you. The mind that will practice no deceits and attempts no disguises.
  2. Its true meaning is not that easy to determine. The recipients knew immediately what Paul was referring to but it is not very easy for us to determine.
Seem to support the view of truth in contrast to falsehood (Eph 4:24,25; 5:9)   On the other hand it can also refer to the gospel of to objective truth (Eph 1:13; 4:13-15;4:21).
  1. Lloyd Jones
The word “truth” in this context means… - a belief in and a knowledge of, the truth as it is in Jesus Christ. - it is the objective truth which I possess in a subjective manner. - it means a mastery of the truth, but it also means being mastered by the truth. I am held by the truth. This is the thing that binds me and holds me together and puts me on my feet and gives me vigor and strength and power. - It means that I do not merely look at the Bible intellectually and study it as it were, say the Works of Shakespeare but rather that its truth gets hold of me and governs my whole attitude to the world, the flesh and the devil. - Truth is the first thing we put on. Without it we are completely lost. It means that we have a settled conviction with regard to the truth. It means also that there are no uncertainties and no doubts. It means also that there must be no lack of clarity. And that means nothing less than that we should know whom we have believed and looked on, understood, and appropriated, and in such a manner that it governs the whole of my outlook in every respect.   Illustration:
  1. History of the church in the New Testament. The devil sowed seeds of confusion.
-Acts 6, false priorities could have hindered the apostle ministry. -Acts 10,11, Inclusion of the Gentiles to the church. -Acts 20:28-31 -Ro. 14 weak and strong. -1Co. ( Do you not know 8x) 1Co 15:33 part of the defense to counter the attack of the devil upon the doctrine of the resurrection.
  • Galatian Heresy: Faith in Christ is not enough.
  • Colosssain Heresy: Extreme form of Judaism and early stage Gnosticism.

History of the church after the New Testament.
  1. Lloyd Jones: The devil in his wiliness tried to cause confusion in the church, so they met together and they said, “These are the essentials of the faith. Recite it, get it into you mind, put it on, gird yourself with it. They wrote the great creeds.
APOSTLES CREED, NICENE CREED, ATHANASIAN CREED. ( See Christianity In Crisis, 375-377) That is one way of girding the loins with truth. The Church made sure of the teaching and then tried to ensure that it was preached and taught everywhere.
  1. The church also in every period of revival and awakening, when she is really alive, and realized the character of the spiritual conflict, has always done this very thing. Drawing up a confession. Augsburg Confession, Belgic Confession, Second Helvetic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, 39 Articles of the Westminster Confession.
This is exactly applying 1Pet 1:13, Therefore prepare your minds for action”.
Ex. Precept Ministries Doctrinal Statement   He who teaches contrary or against to these touches the essentials of our faith that will affect salvation of souls. We should have no fellowship with them. He or she is no brother.
